MANY MOONS AGO THE DOLLAR WAS 870 LIRE AND I WAS THIRTY-TWO

That's the first sentence of Watermark, an English-language essay by Russian emigré poet and Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky (1940-96) who has made regular winter trips to Venice for 17 subsequent years in a sort of a creative pilgrimage.
