More than a 100 years since Tuva first became a Russian protectorate and even more years since first Russian settlers began penetrating in the isolated Tuva, mixed marriages are still a rare sight here. Filipp was born in Hungary, the son of a Soviet army officer. Trained as a psychologist in Moscow, he worked as a chef at a Japanese restaurant in the Russian capital where he met Shonchalay, a native of a Tuvan village who failed her exams at a Moscow university but stayed on and went to work as a waitress at that Japanese restaurant (in early 2000s, these establishments hired mostly 'Asian-looking' Russian minorities including Tuvans, Kalmyks, Buryats and Yakuts). Filipp's parents were not really happy with his marriage (because of Shonchalay's origin) until a story that happened to them some years later. Filipp was invited by a friend to work as a chef in Goa, India, where he then opened his own food joint but then got involved in some semi-legal activities, was jailed for a few months, then released on bail and fled India with a forged passport, first going to Nepal, then Tibet, China, and finally finding himself in Mongolia from where he was helped by Shonchalay's Mongolian relatives to illegally cross the Russian-Mongolian border in Tuva. The couple and their two kids have finally settled in Kyzyl ever since. Of Russian-Tuvan interethnic relations Shonchalay recalls that during late Soviet era, most Tuvans faced daily discrimination at almost every step - from getting jobs and housing to buying bus tickets or being served at shops - except for the very top positions in the regional government, most well-paying jobs were held by ethnic Russians and the capital Kyzyl was considered a "Russian" city - rural Tuvans being kept away. When the Soviet economy collapsed, Tuva's Russian community has shrank significantly, and this discrimination is now long gone although tensions can still be felt. Ethnic Russians and Tuvans form two distinct communities that rarely mix up and only interact out of necessity.

Once part of a vast medieval Turkic Khaganate, the territory of the present-day Tuva changed hands many times. From mid-18 century and up until 1912 it was a province of the Chinese Qing Empire. China did not rule Tuvans directly though, outsourcing it to the Mongols, themselves part of the Qing Empire until 1911. When the latter fell apart, the Tuvan tribal leaders appealed to the Russian tsar Nicholas II for protection, and in 1914 a Russian protectorate known as Uriankhai Territory (a Mongol term for Tuvans) was established and its capital Belotsarsk (City of the White Tsar) founded. When the Russian Empire collapsed in turn just 3 years later, Tuva was left on its own until 1921 when it declared independence but delegated foreign policy to the new Soviet Russian government. It was only recognized by neighboring Russia and Mongolia though. Other countries continued to consider it a Chinese territory. Up until 1944 when the People's Republic of Tuva has formally joined the Soviet Union, it was de facto a Soviet protectorate as well, a sort of the Soviet Puerto Rico. Interestingly, the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan) continues to formally consider Tuva part of Greater China. Unusually for an overcentralized Russia, Tuva celebrates its main holiday coinciding with the day of independence (15 August) not the day when it was incorporated into the Soviet Union (11 October).
